Cromat CG Studio is a young Architectural visualization firm that was created in 2011 by 2 recently graduated Costa Ricans architects. The company's main specialization is to create interactive medias to promote architectural projects.
Alberto Collado and Ana Lucía González share with us their recent experience with LumenRT 2, on the Paradisus Project.
About Cromat CG Studio
E-on: Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
AC: Both of us started studies in architecture at the University of Costa Rica back in 2004. During our school years, we've learned how to use quite a few different CAD tools, but creating nice looking renders for our projects has always been the hardest task. In the end, most of our presentations had to be done on simple 2D drawings.
ALG: We've also seen the hard time most people have to understand the design projects they are looking at. Reading floor plans and section drawings is not easy for anyone not used to doing this.
As a consequence, one of our goals is to offer our clients new and easy ways to comprehend the designs we do.
AC: We started Cromat CG Studio in 2011 with that in mind, that is, to find and apply new technology to our presentations.
In Costa Rica, architecture companies usually offer still render packages for their clients, some are very good and some look like they were made with MSPaint. We have played in the past with some of this software, like 3DS and Vectorworks, but they are slow to model and even more to render some good results.
ALG: LumenRT gave us the opportunity to offer our clients a fast and attractive way to deliver great media at a very low production cost.
About the Paradisus Project
E-on: Can you give us an insight of the Paradisus Project?
AC:The Paradisus Project is an Architectural project from ConstruReal, one of our real estate clients. They were looking for a way to show their own clients what their future home would look like in a way anyone could understand. Simple floor plans just weren’t enough.
ALG: The whole process took about 45 days, out of which the modeling phase took the most part. Our clients wanted very detailed interiors and were very specific about what they liked and what they did not like.
The good thing is that it was very easy for us to produce many reviews, and to show them the latest updates (and not just the Sketchup model). We simply had to do the changes in SketchUp, re-export to LumenRT, save the animation and done! It took at most a couple of hours to have a completely updated full quality HD video ready to show.
Living room variations
AC:The whole animation was rendered in LumenRT in standard settings because the apartments were kind of deep and windows on only one side. So there were dim areas that we were unable to light up naturally. On top of this, our clients required the actual real view from the windows. Since we didn't have Vue at that time, we used some tricks to add the scenery outside.
Interactive walk through has been our most useful tool with LumenRT. Together with Augmented Reality and 3D video, all this represent great new ways to communicate ideas and projects.
E-on: How did you learn about LumenRT, and why did you choose it over any other 3D application?
AC: We heard about LumenRT some time before working on the Paradisus Project, from one of e-on´s newsletter, and thought it was very impressive.
We were looking for something different to show our designs to our clients, and it was a nice surprise to see how fast we could create high quality stills and animation compared to normal ray tracing rendering times.
We use Vectorworks for normal CAD design but we’ve always felt it quite stiff compared to the natural modeling feeling of Sketchup. So we’re always on the look-out for new plug-ins.
Paradisus was our first chance to test LumenRT in production. Our clients were very happy to see how fast we could produce new reviews after each meeting.
ALG: At a certain point into production, ConstruReal urgently needed some stills to present during a meeting with the board. All we had to do was to take a few nice snapshots from one of our Livecubes and within 20 min, the ContruReal heads were presenting them in a meeting room in Panama! This is something that would have been almost impossible with any other software package.
AC: The possibility to see the interior of our designs, with real natural light effects and simple controls gave us the chance to really feel our work from the inside.
We really recommend LumenRT to anyone who is starting in architecture visualization industry, especially because you don't need an ultra high-end computer to create professional looking media.
E-on: What kind of improvements/additions would you like to see in LumenRT?
AC:In the near future we are hoping to see LumenRT work for portable devices, web embedding and native stereoscopic support such as 3D glasses or at least 3d video export, that would be a terrific asset in our workflow.
